About Us
C.S.I Institute of Legal Studies, Cheruvarakonam, established in 2013, is a premier law institution affiliated with the University of Kerala and approved by the Bar Council of India. Managed by the South Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India, the institution is rooted in a distinguished legacy of educational and social transformation.
The origins of this legacy trace back to the missionary-led educational renaissance in Travancore during the 19th century. Visionaries of the London Missionary Society, including Rev. Dr. David Bogue and Rev. Charles Mead, pioneered inclusive education by establishing institutions that broke barriers of caste and social inequality, laying the foundation for modern higher education in the region.
Inspired by this rich heritage, the Institute was founded as the vision of Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Dharmaraj Rasalam to extend quality legal education to the rural and underserved regions of Kerala. Modelled on the lines of National Law Schools, it offers integrated law programmes, LL.B, and LL.M courses, combining academic rigour with practical training.
With a dynamic academic environment, modern facilities, and a strong emphasis on ethics, social responsibility, and professional excellence, the institution continues to shape competent legal professionals who contribute meaningfully to the judiciary, academia, and society at large.

About the Logo
The logo of the Moderator Gladstone CSI Institute of Legal Studies is a harmonious blend of faith, culture, and the ideals of justice. It comprises a Cross superimposed on a stylized lotus flower, along with the scales of justice and an advocate’s emblem, flanked by olive leaves on either side, all set against a white background. The logo bears the motto: “The Truth Shall Set You Free.”
The imposing central position of the Cross denotes the foundation of the Church and its faith, while its four arms of equal length promulgate equality, inclusiveness, and balance.
The lotus flower, known as “Pankaj” (meaning “mud-born” in Sanskrit), has held deep spiritual and symbolic significance in India since ancient times. Its presence in the logo proclaims the indigenous nature of the Church of South India and reflects its dependence on the grace of God. Just as the lotus blooms at sunrise and closes at sunset, it symbolizes reliance on divine light. The stylized rendering of the lotus petals also evokes the imagery of the fiery, divided tongues of the Holy Spirit, signifying divine inspiration and guidance.
Scales of Justice: Represent fairness, impartiality, and the ethical administration of law, corresponding to the metaphor of matters being “held in the balance.”
Advocate’s Emblem: Signifies the institution’s mission of shaping young, socially responsible lawyers committed to justice and nation-building.
Olive Leaves: Symbolize peace, harmony, and reconciliation—values integral to both law and faith. The white background represents purity, peace, and integrity.
Motto: “The Truth Shall Set You Free,” drawn from the Bible (John 8:32), conveys that the knowledge of truth liberates and empowers individuals.
In 2025, the institution was renamed to include “Moderator Gladstone” in its title, as a mark of deep respect and gratitude to the Most Rev. J. W. Gladstone, former Moderator and Bishop of the CSI South Kerala Diocese, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the Church, the community, and society at large.
